10 myths about tanning that you probably still believe

It takes approx. 4 minutes to read this article

We all enjoy the sun as much as we can. Summer is just around the corner, so everyone wants to have a beautiful tan. However, there are still many myths surrounding the subject of tanning. What are they? Check them out!

The days are getting warmer and warmer. And so the tanning season begins. The sun not only provides us with vitamin D3, but also makes our skin look more attractive. However, it also has its other side, because are you sure that prolonged exposure to the sun will not affect our body badly? Despite a lot of talk about healthy tanning, there are still a lot of myths and misinformation circulating. Here are 10 of them!

1. Tanned skin is healthy skin

Our society still thinks that too pale skin can be a symptom of various diseases, such as anemia, and that tanned skin is healthy. Of course, the sun provides the body with vitamin D3, but the color that our skin takes on when exposed to the sun shows that our body is defending itself against harmful UV rays.

2. Pre-tanning will give you protection from burns

This is another myth, which Poles still believe. Solarium will not prepare your skin for tanning and will not guarantee greater protection from UV radiation. Just because your skin will get a golden shade doesn’t mean it will protect you from getting burned

3. Darker skin does not need sunscreen

People with lighter complexions are usually aware that they can get quick redness from the sun. However, those with darker skin do not realize that they are also at risk of getting burned and bad rays. Just because you have a darker complexion doesn’t mean you can spend long hours in the full sun without a problem. Anyone can be at risk for skin cancer and premature aging caused by overexposure to UV rays

4. Using one SPF cream for your body and face

One sunscreen for your entire body and face? We say no to that! Facial skin is different from the rest of the body. It is more sensitive and easy to get unwanted burns or discoloration. For the face, you should use special SPF creams that are designed only for this part of the body. Such a cream should be applied to the face 30 minutes before going out in the sun, and then repeat the application every 2-3 hours

5. Using sunscreen creams from last summer

The fifth myth, which is also worth remembering. Do not apply sunscreen creams from last summer. Such products have a symbol on the package indicating the expiration date of the product. Usually it is up to 6 months to 9 maximum. If we use an expired cosmetic, we can get irritation. Besides, the effectiveness of the cream may be reduced by up to 70 percent. So we encourage you to use new sunscreen creams with the new summer season

6. SPF 50 creams provide one hundred percent protection

There are no sunscreens that provide 100 percent protection from harmful ultraviolet rays. To make sure that to some extent we can protect ourselves from harmful rays, we should use sunscreen creams appropriate for the season (in summer we use SPF30 or SPF50). And remember that when you spend the whole day outside, the cream should be applied several times.

7. Solariums are healthier for your skin than sunbathing

This is absolutely not true! The dose of UV radiation we serve ourselves when visiting a solarium is greater than the sun. Such a large amount of radiation in a very short time has a very negative effect on the skin. The intensity of radiation in tanning beds can be as much as twelve times higher than sunlight. And the risk of cancer, namely melanoma, increases many times.

8. Get a quick tan while walking or playing games at the beach

Doing any activity in the sun, whether it’s working in the garden, painting a fence, or playing volleyball on the beach, will also give you a bronze tan. You don’t have to get a bronze tan any faster on the move than if you were lying on the beach, because the sun’s rays have the same effect.

9. Tanning keeps your skin beautiful and healthy

Beautiful, yes, but not for long. Any exposure to the sun or a visit to a solarium will make your skin age faster. There is damage to the tissues deep under the skin. As we age, everything becomes more visible and the effects of tanning take years to show.

10. You can’t get a tan on a cloudy day

The last myth that also circulates in our society. Even with a slightly cloudy sky, sun rays can break through and affect our skin
