The pricking of specific points on the body with needles is becoming increasingly popular. Acupuncture, as it is referred to, improves overall health. Why else is it worth using?

Probably many times you have seen on TV or net programs about acupuncture. A man or woman lets their body be pricked almost completely with needles. When you see it, you clench your teeth, the so called sympathetic pain syndrome is activated. Only it does not hurt at all. It is necessary to dispel all myths that strongly negatively characterize acupuncture.

It is supposed to restore energy in the body. What else are the principles of acupuncture?

What exactly is acupuncture? The word itself comes from Latin, where it is a combination of two words: “acus” meaning needle and “punctura” translated as prick, sting. Nowadays, it is a well-known medical practice consisting mainly in stimulation of selected points on our body with needles. However, laymen in this subject surely wonder what is the purpose of this practice of pricking the body with needles? What is it actually for? And where did this idea actually come from?

As it turns out, it is not something new, because acupuncture treatment has been known for hundreds of years and has more and more enthusiasts. The technique of healing and eliminating pain by means of needle pricks on the body is based primarily on the concept of energetic balance. Its main premise and goal in itself is to reduce the sensation of a specific pain and thereby improve overall health.

Acupuncture is a branch of traditional Chinese medicine and its roots can be traced back to ancient times. Today it is also gaining popularity in the West, including Europe and the United States.

What exactly is acupuncture treatment?

A patient who comes to see someone qualified to perform acupuncture treatment must prepare to have points on their body pricked with special, solid needles. The practice involves stimulating the pricked areas, called acupuncture points. According to proponents, this helps strengthen the human immune system, but also stimulates the circulatory system.

Acupuncture therapy is also said to help alleviate the pain experienced. It is worth bearing in mind that a single session of pricks may not immediately prove to be the solution to our pain. Such treatment usually requires several series of treatments.

Medics have open discussions about the effectiveness of acupuncture. There are those, who believe that the method of puncturing the body and stimulating the pricked places does not improve health in any way. There are also proponents who use this medical practice to treat their patients.

What specific ailments does acupuncture help with and what are the indications for performing it?

Most commonly, people who struggle with recurring headaches and severe migraines undergo acupuncture. The treatment also helps to somewhat reduce arthritic and muscular pain, and discomfort after surgery.

There are also contraindications to its performance. Pregnant women and people who have venous congestion or open wounds should not undergo acupuncture.
